Hostmonster Review

HostMonster is actually founded and operated by the same man who founded and operates BlueHost, i.e. Matt Heaton! Surprise! Surprise!

If you look at the contact page of both sites, they shows the same mailing address! Before this, they even share the same contact numbers! You will also notice from the contact page that the business development manager is James Grierson for both companies.

Their web design look alike. Their order forms is exactly the same! Both of them offer only 1 hosting plan which is exactly the same!
Price Comparison with HostGator and LunarPages
HostMonster/BlueHost HostGator LunarPages
12 month $4.95 $7.95 $9.95 $8.95
24 month $3.95 $6.95 $8.95 $6.95
36 month $3.95 $6.95 $7.95 -

The pricing is incredible. HostMonster and BlueHost is doing a crazy promotion right now. They are giving this promotion to several websites only to test the market and I am proud to say that this website is one of the chosen one!

The discount is actually $72 when you sign up for 24 months and $36 when you sign up for 12 months! You should take note of this big discount. I love LunarPages a lot but I am disappointed that they actually increase their 12 month plan price from $7.95 to $8.95 instead of lowering it. They are publishing the price $4.95 everywhere but that’s for 60 month plan (5 years!) which I think not much people are interested in.

HostGator is a also a very good host (where this site is hosted). But their pricing doesn’t make everyone happy.

Please be reminded that this is a short term promotion and I don’t know how long it will last. I hope it will last a bit longer or even become permanent but I cannot guarantee anything here.

The above chart is obtained from Google showing the search volume of the 4 keywords – HostMonster, BlueHost, HostGator and LunarPages for the last 5 years.

LunarPages is an old established host but their trend is flat. BlueHost rised up in the middle of 2005 and even outgrown LunarPages for the last few years. Hostgator rised up almost the same time and same pace as BlueHost.

The HostMonster brand is later launched in mid 2006 and has also outpaced LunarPages in a year time. Although the branding of HostMonster might not be as good as BlueHost, but I believe it will slowly catch up.
Free Domain Name & Free Private Whois

HostMonster and BlueHost offer free domain name for life as long as you renew with them. Currently, they are also giving free private whois protection to your domain name to protect you from spams. Normally it is priced at $8.99.

As a comparison, LunarPages is only offering free domain name for your first term of payment. You will need to pay for the domain name when you renew your hosting. Also private whois is charged $7.95/year.

Not only HostGator is not providing you free whois service, they don’t even give you a free domain name.
They Will Give You Prorated Refund!

Because they are so confident with their business, they are the ONLY web host that will give you a prorated refund if you choose to stop anytime! If you choose to cancel within 30 days for any reason, they will give you a FULL refund, if you cancel after the 30 days, you will get prorated refund depending on how many months left in your contract.

For example if you sign up for 24 months to lock in the discount price of $3.95 per month. You pay a total of $94.80. And you choose to cancel after using it for 6 months, you will get back 18 month of hosting fee, that is $71.10!

Because of this, hosting with HostMonster (or BlueHost) is risk free! I fully respect their way of doing business and I believe this will win the hearts of many customers.

Sale! $7.49.com from GoDaddy.com - 468x60

GoDaddy is an Internet domain registrar and web hosting company that also sells e-business related software and services. In 2010, it reached more than 40 million domain names under management. Go Daddy is currently the largest ICANN-accredited registrar in the world, and is three times the size of its closest competitor. Known for its racy marketing, Go Daddy started advertising in the Super Bowl in 2005. Since then, the company expanded its marketing to include sports sponsorships. Go Daddy filed for an IPO in 2006, but later cancelled it, due to “market uncertainties.” Go Daddy maintains that it wants to protect the Internet, but some of their actions have drawn criticism.

In 2010, Go Daddy ranked as one of three finalists in the BBB of Great Arizona Business Ethics Awards. BBB’s Board of Directors and Foundation established the BBB Business Ethics Awards to recognize those firms whose business practices and related activities exemplify the BBB’s mission and principles, and to ensure the marketplace remains fair and honorable. In 2009 Go Daddy was voted “Best Registrar” Domain Name Wire annual survey for the 4th consecutive year.
